IPO conspiracy? | 24.03.05

There’s a rumor (repeat, rumor) that the senseless drama against the stock market listing of Thai Beverages is just a dressed rehearsal for an all-out attempt to block the upcoming privatization of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

If this turns out to be true, just remember where you first heard it.

Otherwise, I never wrote this post.

update See “EGAT Privatization”.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I’ve actually read the article (accidentally, since I don’t normally read Thai newspapers, much less that one) and “interesting” is not the word I’d use to describe it.

That is, mind you, not just because the columnist’s hypothesis is the exact opposite of mine. What we have here are essentially rumors, and I honestly don’t know which is right. The difference is I made that clear in my post, while he seemed to think of himself as a prophet revealing an arcane truth to devotees.

I will explain later why you should avoid such a peddler of “inside information” like the plague. For now, here are some facts for the uninitiated:

  1. This pompous Manager columnist who goes by the pen name of “Siew Saolong” is Sondhi Limthongkul, who also happens to be the owner of that newspaper. (The linked article was written in 1995, two years before it became clear the answer to the question posed below the headline was an emphatic “Yes”.) I don’t follow him, but he appears to be relatively pro-Thaksin and wildly anti-American.
  2. He’s talked about issues I do know about before and proved himself to be full of merde.

Judging from the article you linked to mightn’t Thai Beverages simply get listed on another stock exchange should they be denied a place on the SET? So who has the most to lose given this scenario? Certainly not Thai Beverages.
