Thailand’s premier “academic” Thirayuth Boonmi congratulated Thailand’s premier ex-premier Anand Panyarachun on the launch of his website (scroll down):

It’s definite that อานันท์ ปันยารชุน web site will be a success. It will be the most valuable source of Anand’s thought on Thailand’s future.

[“อานันท์ ปันยารชุน” is simply Anand Panyarachun and “most valuable” was inserted between the lines.]

Now you may be willing to overlook the prolixity (“It’s definite that”), solecism (singular “thought”), and general awkwardness of Khun Thirayuth’s message; after all he’s not a native English speaker. But that only raises the question: why would someone with such a tenuous grasp of the language, not to mention someone who is fervently anti-West, congratulate a fellow Thai in English?

Khun Thirayuth will never admit this, but like the mass marketers and consumers that he so loathes, he, too, is captivated by of the English language’s savvy and sexy appeal. Hypocrisy aside, there’s no shame in that. Khun Thirayuth just picked the wrong occasion to practice his poor English.

Still, even in the good professor’s mangled version, English necessitates a basic structure, which is desperately lacking in standard Thai speech and writing. This brings us to a second point: you’d be gravely mistaken to believe that Khun Thirayuth’s Thai prose would be better just because Thai is his mother tongue. It isn’t. If anything, it’s worse.
