Thaksin and his enemies | 24.03.06
Once again, The Economist wouldn’t publish my letter. And once again, Sarasonteh kindly will:
Dear Editor,
Accompanying your leader about anti-Thaksin protesters (“Enemies of democracy”, March 4th) is a picture of one with a “Thaksin & Thaksinomic[s] Get Out” sign. If you had bothered to find out what “Thaksinomics” meant to him and his comrades, they would’ve emerged as enemies of not only democracy, but also privatization, free trade, foreign takeovers, “neo-liberalism”, and all sorts of other conspiracies that, they say, would turn Thailand into the dreadful Argentina (a country that’s only 39 places above Thailand on the Human Development Index ranking). This alone should warrant another look at the “nationalist and populist” prime minister, as you described him in another leader a year ago, and all the more so given your overt enthusiasm for Lula da Silva.
